Kal

The word "kal" in Romani means black. As a Roma (or as many non-Roma refer to it, "gypsy") ensemble, the group was founded by two brothers, Dragan and Dusan Ristic, to confront the stereotypes and prejudices associated with their culture. The band is based out of Belgrade, Serbia and mixes Roma music from throughout the Balkans with a contemporary 21st Century edge. Kal has made it their mission to honor the tradition but bring to it a youthful and urgent sensibility. In 2006 Kal produced a CD that instantly became a world music favorite. The members of Kal are Dragan Ristic (guitar & lead vocal), Dragan Mitrovic (accordion), Jovica Maric (accordion & vocals), Djordje Belkic (violin), Aleksandar Cvejic (electric bass), Goran Savic (Drum) and Aleksandar Radojicic (percussion).
